International Relations

Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra assumed the internationalisation process as one of its key institutional policies and, together with its schools, it promotes strong cooperation links with several foreign universities and polytechnics, especially through student and teacher exchange programmes, research, curricular and education systems development and professional training. Its priorities are reinforcing the European dimension and cooperating with Portuguese-speaking countries.

European Cooperation

   Lifelong Learning Programme Erasmus (LLP/ERASMUS)

Within the scope of the LLP/ERASMUS Community programme, the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (which first participation happened in 1989) firms student and teacher mobility bilateral agreements with approximately eighty European universities and polytechnics. Through its colleges, IPC also develops several Curricular Development Projects, Intensive Programmes, European Modules and integrates Thematic Networks.
Each year, about one hundred IPC’s students carry out an ERASMUS studies period in one of its partner institutions all over Europe (from Spain to Turkey, from Finland to Italy…).
Each year, about thirty IPC’s teachers carry out an ERASMUS teaching mission in an European institution.

Concerning projects developed by IPC or its schools, supported by the LEONARDO DA VINCI PROGRAMME, some of the Polytechnic’s students, newly graduates have received curricular and professional training in companies and institutions of several European countries.

   PRIME Network

Since 1999, IPC has integrated the PRIME network (Professional Inter-University Management Education Network). This is mainly an independent network of European institutions of higher education, which aim at exchanging common interests and promoting the development of practical, intercultural and interdisciplinary programmes and projects, which help promote education, research and applied training, as well as “student mobility”.
Currently, the network is made up of institutions from Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Cooperating with Portuguese-speaking countries

Either directly or through its colleges, the IPC has sought to develop tight cooperation links with the Portuguese-speaking countries, namely by establishing protocols or carrying out several academic and scientific projects in Brazil, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, Angola, Mozambique and East Timor.
In the scope of such cooperation, for its strategic relevance, we point out the work that has been developed with the Democratic Republic of Cape Verde, where, since 1999, the IPC has been involved in the creation, preparation, coordination and teaching of several post-secondary courses and higher level courses.
We must also mention the initiatives of educational mobility carried out with Brazilian learning and research institutes. In the scope of this action, the College of Agriculture has played a very important part in the many exchange programmes developed through Protocols signed with Universities and other institutions in Brazil, namely São Paulo University, Viçosa Federal University, Santa Maria Federal University and EMBRAPA – Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agro-Pecuria (Brazilian agriculture and animal research corporation). Two news protocols with São Paulo University and Rio de Janeiro Federal University, allow to the mobility of students and teachers.
